Abstract
Architectural design for a pedestrian underpass in an urban intersection; an anticipated interaction measured by directions and durations. Within the underpass walls become sonic mirrors, domes form acoustic lenses and passageways act as filters. Here material and form are primarily a stepping-stone to an interaction that unfolds in time. Numerous wave-fronts traveling in multiple trajectories, reflect off and react with all the scattered objects and air volumes producing an interference tapestry in space that bridges between our singular perceptions and the surrounding events and surfaces. The interplay of sounds depends entirely on the surrounding activities. Even a well defined path taken through the underpass will yield a slightly different experience each time it is negotiated. Appearance, in this case, no longer adheres to representation, instead it favors the perpetual flux of moments. Passages aims to fulfill a double purpose: the first is a simple utilitarian link between the various corners of an intersection, the second is to create a space for heightened perception; a detour from our ocular centric experience of the built environment.
